Four Generations December 2012

Edward "Mr. Ed" Dugan of Seattle, WA passed very peacefully on April 4, 2014 at the Nordic Woods Adult Family Home in Lake Forest Park, WA.  He had spent a “glorious” day as he reported to one of the caregivers, walking with his daughter on the Burke-Gilman Trail, enjoying the rare Seattle sun and singing, “Ramblin Rose” with his Nordic Woods Family after dinner.   Ed had a beautiful voice and in his younger days, loved to play his recorder and hum a tune.

He was born on August 4, 1926 in Hellertown, PA to Harry and Mary Dugan. During the war, he was stationed at Keesler Field, Mississippi and Williams Air Force Base in Arizona.  In 1945, he married Marie K Nagy who survives him and lives in Mesa, Arizona.   He graduated from Lehigh University in 1949 with a BS in Industrial Engineering where he later also received his MBA.   Ed worked at the Bethlehem Steel Company for 30 years doing what today is defined by businesses as “process optimization”.   He was a master of efficiency and getting the job done.

Ed loved to garden in the Rodale organic way and produced a prolific bounty for his family every summer.  He was a gifted craftsman, building much of the furniture in the family home himself from his own black walnut trees.

Four Generations

His life exemplified his love for helping others. He had a strong sense of the goodness in people.  Ed was active as a Boy Scout troop scoutmaster from 1952 until 1960.  During the 70’s he served in the Peace Corps stationed in Sogamoso, Colombia advising small businesses on how to expand their industry, train staff and how to create more jobs.  He participated in Earth Watch Expeditions in several countries and loved to travel. Over a period of 20 years, he did volunteer work helping the elderly with their income taxes.

Ed and his sisters

In 1989, Ed moved to Seattle, WA.  He loved to bike on the Burke-Gilman Trail, always having a smile and wave for all.  He was a continuous learner, loved a good game of cards, bowling at Kenmore Bowling and reading about global finance and geopolitics.  Ed will always be remembered for his friendly smile and love of good food and being with family.

In addition to Marie Dugan, he is survived by his son Edward T and daughter-in-law, Kathy Dugan residing in Gainesville, Fla.; his daughter Kathlyn M and son-in-law Ken Simkins of Lake Forest Park, WA; and his four granddaughters: Marie K Robinson of Woodinville,WA; Roselea T. Duffy-Kosusko of Newberg, OR; Ellenmarie Dugan of Seattle, WA; Rosanna Dugan of Denver, CO; two great-granddaughters Ciara and Olivia Robinson and one great-grandson, Colin Robinson.  Ed is also survived by four sisters: Frances Schrantz of Alexandria, VA; Genevieve Goff of Branford, CT; and Dixie White and Catherine Barrett both of Bethlehem, PA.

Ed will be greatly missed at family gatherings where he reigned supreme as the master of eccentric expressions and clever quips.
